June 5, 2012 Primary Election

The primary election is held for the members of political parties to nominate their candidates for the general election. In Iowa, participating voters must declare their party preference, Democratic or Republican before receiving a ballot. Voters registered as no party may declare a party preference and vote on primary election day by registering with the preferred party. The office of president does not appear on Iowa ballots because in Iowa the political parties hold presidential caucuses in January.
